“It’s Monday! What are you reading?” is a weekly meme hosted by Book Date. The folks at Teacher Mentor Texts and Unleashing Readers have given #IMWAYR a new lens by focusing on books for kids & teens. Check out their blogs to see what they’re reading!
WHAT I READ LAST WEEK
- With the Fire on High by Elizabeth Acevedo
- The Bride Test by Helen Hoang
- Daisy Jones & the Six by Taylor Jenkins Reid
- Queens of Geek by Jen Wilde
- Her Royal Highness by Rachel Hawkins
WHAT I’M READING THIS WEEK:
There’s Something About Sweetie by Sandhya Menon
I feel like I’ve been waiting for this book for so long! I loved When Dimple Met Rishi and I’m so excited to see Rishi’s little brother Ashish get his own romance. Sweetie is a fat desi athlete and she’s already one of my favorite YA characters ever.
After just starting this a couple days ago, I’m already hooked and can tell it’s going to be one of my favorite YA romances of the year. Sandhya is so good at creating realistic, loveable characters! I’m so excited to finish this and see Ashish & Sweetie both get the happy ending they deserve.
Thank you Simon Pulse for providing me with a digital review copy via NetGalley! There’s Something About Sweetie is out on May 14!
Hope and Other Punchlines by Julie Buxbaum
After having her books recommended to me over and over again, I was so excited to finally start my first Julie Buxbaum book! This YA contemporary is about two teens who’ve been affected by 9/11 in two very different ways: Abbi is a survivor who’s become famous because of an iconic photo of her as a baby at Ground Zero, while Noah has grown up believing that his dad, who died in the attack, is out there somewhere.
This novel is a really unique story, and I’m hooked on the audiobook! I love that it has Jewish rep and also discusses the long-term effects on survivors of 9/11. I’m looking forward to finishing this one, and will definitely be reading more from Julie!
What are you reading this week?
Hearing good things about Menon latest. So I hope you enjoy it! And I’m going to go read a little about Hope and Other Punchlines. This is a new title to me, so I’m intrigued. Thanks, Ari!

When Dimple Met Rishi is soooo good! You can definitely read There’s Something About Sweetie without having read that one (it’s more of a companion, not a direct sequel) but it’s fun if you’re familiar with the characters. Happy reading!

I’m looking forward to reading With the Fire on High. I adored The Poet X! There’s Something About Sweetie is also on my list. I better get on to The Kiss Quotient seeing that the sequel is already here!

Me too!! Helen Hoang’s books are such page turners!
I thought Her Royal Highness was cute! I liked it more than Prince Charming. Nothing that new or special but a sweet, cute read.
