“It’s Monday! What are you reading?” is a weekly meme hosted by Book Date. The folks at Teacher Mentor Texts and Unleashing Readers have given #IMWAYR a new lens by focusing on books for kids & teens. Check out their blogs to see what they’re reading!
WHAT I READ LAST WEEK
- The Love and Lies of Rukhsana Ali by Sabina Khan
- Pulp by Robin Talley
- Dread Nation by Justina Ireland (audiobook narrated by the amazing Bahni Turpin)
- Blended by Sharon M. Draper
- The Broken Vow (Spill Zone #2) by Scott Westerfield & Alex Puvilland
- One True Way by Shannon Hitchcock
I was able to get a ton of reading done this past week, in part due to having a four-day weekend. It was awesome getting to read lots of queer books (I hadn’t planned on reading One True Way, but Pulp totally put me in the mood for more historical queer stories!) and a couple of middle grade books. Dread Nation is one that I’d been working on for a while, since the audiobook is quite long, and I was glad I finally had the time to finish it. I hope that I can keep up the momentum and get through lots more in the last few days of November!
WHAT I’M EXCITED TO READ THIS WEEK:
This Is What It Feels Like by Rebecca Barrow
This one has been on my TBR for months and I was so excited when my library’s copy was waiting for me last week! It’s about three friends who’ve lost each other trying to find their way back to each other through music while dealing with change, recovery, and love. Plus it’s about a girl band and has already gotten lots of great reviews that have got me amped to read it.
I normally don’t like covers with actual people on them, but I’m kind of obsessed with this one! (I’ve also had Rebecca’s other book, You Don’t Know Me But I Know You on my TBR for the longest time and need to get to it soon.
Slayer by Kiersten White
When my friend/coworker messaged me last week to tell me that a Slayer ARC had arrived at our library, I basically started internally screaming. Anyone who has ever met me knows that Buffy the Vampire Slayer is one of my favorite things EVER. I know as soon as I go to work this week & get my hands on this ARC, I’m gonna have to read it right away!
I’m both excited and nervous about this one, since I really want it to be amazing. I’ve read some really bad Buffyverse novels (although I did enjoy Go Ask Malice) but this one seems promising!
What are you reading this week?
I’m currently reading One True Way. Blended looks good. My weekly update

I really enjoyed the audiobook, Bahni Turpin is such a good narrator! I didn’t expect to like it (since I normally prefer contemporary YA) but the audiobook made it a lot easier for me to get into.

Buffy was like my favorite. I used to call my best friend and we’d stay on the phone for the entire episode, usually only talking during commercials. Super pumped about Slayer by Kiersten White.

Haha that’s awesome! When I was a kid, the Buffy reruns were on at 4 AM and I actually convinced my mom to let me get up at the crack of dawn to watch it before school.
