“It’s Monday! What are you reading?” is a weekly meme hosted by Book Date. The folks at Teacher Mentor Texts and Unleashing Readers have given #IMWAYR a new lens by focusing on books for kids & teens. Check out their blogs to see what they’re reading!
WHAT I READ LAST WEEK
- Sawkill Girls by Claire Legrand
- Hey, Kiddo by Jarret J. Krosoczka
- Sheets by Brenna Thummler
WHAT I’M EXCITED TO READ THIS WEEK:
The Love and Lies of Rukhsana Ali by Sabina Khan
Rukhsana is a queer teen struggling to live up to her Muslim Bengali parents’ traditional & conservative views. When her parents catch Rukhsana kissing her girlfriend Ariana, they are distraught and take her to Bangladesh.
I can’t believe 2018 is almost over and I’m about to read a 2019 release! This is one of my most anticipated books and my awesome friend was nice enough to share her ARC with me. I’m so ready for queer POC Muslim rep and the book also wins bonus points since Rukhsana’s girlfriend and I share a name! Plus I’m obsessed with the cover design and I also love that the author was inspired by her queer daughter to write this book. I definitely have a feeling that this will be a new favorite for me.
Pulp by Robin Talley
A dual-narrative novel about two queer teens: one in the 1950s and one today, both discovering lesbian pulp fiction. Abby and Janet have wildly different experiences and are products of different times & political climates, but are connected through reading and storytelling.
Pulp is a Fall release that I’ve been not-so-patiently awaiting for months! I love the idea of two queer teens being connected by books across decades, and it really speaks to how so many queer teens discover their identities through stories. I haven’t read any of Robin Talley’s books before, but she’s an author that a lot of people have recommended to me so I’m excited to give this one a try.
I’m still working on finishing up Dread Nation by Justina Ireland (audiobook narrated by Bahni Turpin) and am hoping to finally finish it this week.
