“It’s Monday! What are you reading?” is a weekly meme hosted by Book Date. The folks at Teacher Mentor Texts and Unleashing Readers have given #IMWAYR a new lens by focusing on books for kids & teens. Check out their blogs to see what they’re reading!
WHAT I READ LAST WEEK
- You Don’t Know Everything, Jilly P! by Alex Gino
- Blanca y Roja by Anna-Marie McLemore
- Fresh Romance, Vol. 1 by Sarah Kuhn, Kate Leth, Sarah Vaughn, Sally Ann Thompson, Trungles, & Sarah Winifred Searle
WHAT I’M EXCITED TO READ THIS WEEK:
Sawkill Girls by Claire Legrand
This spooky, queer, feminist YA novel has been on my TBR for so long and I was super excited to see that my ebook library hold was finally ready for me! Sawkill Girls has gotten so many great reviews and it has queer, POC, and fat characters. It sounds chilling & diverse and totally has one of those covers that I wish I could buy a print of for my wall!
I have a feeling this is going to be a perfect Fall read with hot chocolate and blankets (and a cat, obviously). Hopefully it’s not too spooky for me, since my tolerance for scary stuff is pretty low.
Front Desk by Kelly Yang
Front Desk is another ebook that I’ve had on hold forever and finally got. I’m eager to read this middle grade novel about Mia, a 10 year-old daughter of Chinese immigrants who works at the front desk of the motel where her parents clean rooms.
There’s been a huge increase of diverse MG books in the last few years, and this is one I’ve been especially excited about.

I’ve heard so many good things about Front Desk, but I still haven’t got around to reading it yet, I’m so far behind on my TBR pile….!!

Fresh Romance caught my eye mainly because of Sarah Vaughn. It’s probably not something I’d normally pick up, but I’ve enjoyed Sarah Vaughn’s comics work in the past so I’m curious what her stuff here is like!

It wasn’t something I’d normally read either! I do wish it had more comics instead of just 5 longish ones. But it was a nice mix and each story was quite different!

I love the sassiness that comes off the cover of You Don’t Know Everything Jilly P. I feel like that really highlights my adolescence.
