Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly meme hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl, where book bloggers are invited to share their top ten lists centered on a certain theme.
This week I decided to talk about something that I don’t boost nearly enough: graphic novels! I love comics and graphic novels but I often forget to talk about them on my blog, so today I’m sharing some favorites that I’ve read recently.
Note: I am an affiliate of Bookshop.org and will receive a small commission if you choose to purchase via the links in this post. This is a way to support indie bookstores & the work I put into this blog! It’s appreciated, but never expected.

- A Map to the Sun by Sloane Leong: This YA graphic novel has a stunning sunset-like color palette, and it tells a compelling story of girlhood, friendship, and basketball.
2. Long Way Down by Jason Reynolds & Danica Novgorodoff: I absolutely loved Jason’s original version of Long Way Down, and the graphic novel brings so much depth to an already incredible YA novel!
3. Displacement by Kiku Hughes: This graphic novel about the Japanese-American Internment draws inspiration from Octavia Butler’s Kindred, and was so powerful.
4. The Magic Fish by Trung Le Nguyen: This story of queerness, family, coming out, fairytales, and immigration was utterly beautiful. It definitely lives up to the hype!
5. Almost American Girl by Robin Ha: This graphic memoir follows the author’s teen years after she moves from Korea to the US. I love graphic memoirs and this was one of my favorites of 2020!
6. Bingo Love by Tee Franklin, Jenn Stonge, & Joy San: A queer love story about two women of color that spans decades, this one filled me with both heartbreak and joy.
7. Dragon Hoops by Gene Luen Yang: Gene is a comics powerhouse, and his newest graphic novel is such a fascinating look at a high school basketball team. It’s a subject I never thought I’d really care about, but I found myself so enjoying it!
8. Mooncakes by Wendy Xu and Suzanne Walker: This paranormal graphic novel has queer rep, disabled rep, and Asian-American rep and is just utterly adorable. I honestly recommend this one to patrons at my library all the time!
9. Juliet Takes a Breath by Gabby Rivera & Delia Moscote: I’d always heard great things about the original YA novel but hand’t had a chance to read it! I loved the graphic novel and now I can’t wait to read the original.
10. Witchy by Ariel Slamet Ries: I love anything about witches, and I also love the unique world-building in this one. It’s another that I recommend all the time at my library!
Are you a fan of comics & graphic novels? If so, what are some of your favorites?

I haven’t read any graphic novels. I love this list. It gives me a starting point.

I just checked out Dragon Hoops. I just about choked when I saw the size of it. Ha! I am making a list of funny books today. I just realized that I hardly ever read funny books and everything right now seems so serious. Here’s my list.

Aaaah I love all your graphics and I’m jealous! I’ve read my first graphic novel last year at the wonderful age of 41. Loved it. Now I just need to get my hands on a few more. Not something that’s very big in SA.
Think you will enjoy our TTT!

I’ve only read one graphic novel. Can you believe that? I need to read more. DISPLACEMENT looks like a good place to start.
Happy TTT!

I just love your cats! I’m currently reading The Promised Neverland manga series, although I don’t typically read a lot of comics and graphic novels. I do on occasion though.

I’m excited to look into these books! I like the idea of graphic novels, but I don’t know where to start with them, and there are only a few manga that I have enjoyed. Aside from what’s on your list, do you have any recommendations for the best graphic novels to start with?

Saga by Brian Vaughn might be my favorite. I loved American Born Chinese by Gene Luan Yang, though, too. For adults, I recently read Good Talk, a graphic memoir by Mira Jacob that I’m still thinking about, months later!
