It’s Monday! What are you reading? June 10, 2019

“It’s Monday! What are you reading?” is a weekly meme hosted by Book Date. The folks at Teacher Mentor Texts and Unleashing Readers have given #IMWAYR a new lens by focusing on books for kids & teens. Check out their blogs to see what they’re reading!

WHAT I READ LAST WEEK

WHAT I’M READING THIS WEEK:

42051103Natalie Tan’s Book of Luck and Fortune by Roselle Lim

I just started this adult romance novel about a young woman returning to her hometown after the death of her estranged mother. When Natalie arrives back in SF’s Chinatown after seven years away, she’s shocked to see how much gentrification has changed the vibrant community she remembers. Armed with her grandmother’s cookbook, she decides to reopen her family’s restaurant.

I love books that center around food, and I especially love that this one takes place in SF’s Chinatown! This one is full of magic, culture, and community. I’m just a few chapters in and am looking forward to seeing where it goes!

Out on June 11! Thanks Berkley Romance for the review copy.

41941681Patron Saints of Nothing by Randy Ribay

A YA contemporary about a Filipino-American boy who travels to the Phillipines after his cousin is murdered as part of President Duerte’s war on drugs. Jay tries to find out the truth behind his cousin’s life and death.

I’m so excited to start this one! I’m part Filipino and am always looking for Filipino rep in YA. I love that this one is about a Filipino-American teen traveling to the Philipinnes. I had a chance to meet Randy Ribay a few months ago at a conference, and he told me about this awesome list of books by Filipino authors he has on his website.

Out on June 18! Thanks Kokila Books for the review copy.

  1. Eliza and Her Monsters was one of my students’ favorite books this year, so I definitely need to get caught up with that one! Natalie Tan and Patron Saint are both in my TBR 🙂
    Happy reading this week!
