Library Haul | January 26, 2019

“Library Haul” is my weekly post where I share all the things I brought home from the library this week! One of my favorite things about being a librarian is bringing home stacks of exciting new reads: books I snagged as soon as they hit the “New arrivals” shelf, hidden gems I stumbled upon in the stacks, digital books I found on Libby, advanced readers copies that arrived in the mail, and more. Even though I don’t always get through all the reads I bring home, I’m excited to share them!

Check Outs

I only checked out two physical books from my library this week because I still have a huge stack sitting at home! I’m really excited about the two I check out, though, because I’ve been on the holds list for both of them for a while.

Check, Please! by Ngozi Ukazu: I’ve heard that this graphic novel about a co-ed hockey club is the cutest thing ever, and it had the longest holds list ever at my library! After waiting for what felt like forever, I can’t wait to finally read it.

Yes, I’m Hot in This: The Hilarious Truth about Life in a Hijab by Huda Fahmy: I have TONS of comic books and graphic novels checked out at home, but this one is definitely the one I’m going to read first!

Digital

Dear Rachel Maddow by Adrienne Kisner: After getting about 1/3 of the way through this YA contemporary (told in emails) last year, I put it down because I just wasn’t in the right mood. The audiobook is pretty short, so I decided to check it out via Libby this week. I’m hoping to finish it, because I really did love the story and diverse rep in it.

The Hazel Wood by Melissa Albert: I try to use audiobooks as a way to read books I’m not super interested in and wouldn’t read otherwise (which, for me, means fantasy novels). I’ve heard good things about this one and decided to give it a try! Also checked out from Libby.

The Rose Society (The Young Elites #2) by Marie Lu: My partner and I have gotten really into listening to audiobooks in the car, and we just finished The Young Elites a couple days ago. We’re both hooked, so I immediately checked out the next one in the series from Libby! I’m really looking forward to seeing where Adelina’s story goes.

Fence, Vol. 2 by C. S. Pacat: I’ve been checking Hoopla everyday to see if the eBook of this one had been added yet, and I definitely squealed this morning when I finally saw it there! Obviously, I immediately downloaded it to my Kindle and will be reading it as soon as I can.

Advanced readers copies

Bloom by Kevin Panetta & Savanna Ganucheau: A queer graphic novel with a main character who shares my name? Obviously I have to read this one soon. Out on February 12!

Silver Meadows Summer by Emma Otheguy: This middle grade novel has been on my TBR for a while, and I was ecstatic to see an ARC arrive at my library! It’s about a transformative summer after eleven year-old Carlonia’s father loses his job and they must move from Puerto Rico to New York. Out on April 30!

Did you check out anything from your local library this week?

  1. Check, Please! was soooo good. And let me know how Bloom is! I’m a little salty over it because First Second declined my request the day before I changed my status to librarian on Netgalley, and now they’ve auto-approved me, but it still shows up as declined. 😂
