“It’s Monday! What are you reading?” is a weekly meme hosted by Book Date. The folks at Teacher Mentor Texts and Unleashing Readers have given #IMWAYR a new lens by focusing on books for kids & teens. Check out their blogs to see what they’re reading!
I use #IMWAYR mostly to organize my reading list for the week and set out my book goals.
WHAT I READ LAST WEEK:
- To Be Honest by Maggie Ann Martin
- A Quiet Kind of Thunder by Sara Barnard
- Ghosts by Raina Telgemeier
- The Cheerleaders by Kara Thomas
WHAT I’M READING THIS WEEK:
Not the Girls You’re Looking For by Aminah Mae Safi
I’ve been super excited about this book for a while, and was SOOOO happy when it arrived on my Kindle via Overdrive. I love the cover of the book, and am always looking for YA contemporaries that center Muslim characters (especially #OwnVoices books!). Lulu sounds like such a strong, confident, and independent character.
Aminah Mae Safi also has a story featured in the upcoming anthology, Fresh Ink, which releases this week on August 14, which is on my TBR as well.
Pride by Ibi Zoboi
A while back, I received this ARC in a giveaway and am hoping to get to it this week. It’s a Pride & Prejudice retelling that centers Black characters and discusses gentrification. I’ve actually never read Pride & Prejudice, but I’m still really excited to read Ibi Zoboi’s take on it. I always think it’s fun to read a retelling when you haven’t read the original, because it keeps you guessing.
I love Ibi Zoboi and highly recommend her 2017 novel, American Street, and cannot even describe how excited I am for the 2019 YA anthology she is editing, Black Enough.
Pride will be released on September 18, 2018. Preorder it here.
Black Enough: Stories of Being Young & Black in America will be out on January 8, 2019, and you can preorder it here.
I’m also still working my way through the Harry Potter & the Order of the Phoenix audiobook narrated by Jim Dale.
What are you reading this week?
So many fantastic books. I’m looking forward to reading Cheerleaders. How did you like it?

It was a fun read! Some of the mystery/thriller elements were somewhat predictable, but there were definitely some surprises as well!

I haven’t read any of your books read but Ghosts & I do enjoy Telgemeier’s novels. I will put those other 3 on my list. Thanks for sharing about Not The Girl You’re Looking For, too. It sounds like one I would like, too.

I haven’t read any of Raina Telgemeier’s other books, but they’re all on my TBR! I’ve heard a lot of great things about Drama in particular.

I’ve been wanting to pick up The Cheerleaders and To Be Honest – are they good?
Pride sounds really interesting. I haven’t read Pride and Prejudice yet though, so I feel like I would need to read that to “get” Pride.
My post is here. Have a great week!

It was soooo good! I normally don’t care much for romance, but I loved that it was diverse, and discussed mental health. Hope you get to read it soon!
