“It’s Monday! What are you reading?” is a weekly meme hosted by Book Date. The folks at Teacher Mentor Texts and Unleashing Readers have given #IMWAYR a new lens by focusing on books for kids & teens. Check out their blogs to see what they’re reading!
I use #IMWAYR mostly to organize my reading list for the week and set out my book goals.
WHAT I READ LAST WEEK:
- Harry Potter & the Goblet of Fire by J. K. Rowling, audiobook narrated by Jim Dale
- Love and Other Alien Experiences by Kerry Winfrey
- CatStronauts: Mission Moon by Drew Brockington
WHAT I’M READING THIS WEEK:
To Be Honest by Maggie Ann Martin
Last week, I received an ARC of this book from Fierce Reads, and I’ve been really enjoying it. Savvy is a lovable character, and it’s so much fun reading about her, her sister, her BFF, and swoony George. I appreciate that even though Savvy is body-positive and proud to be fat, she still struggles with body insecurity; this really makes her so relatable and authentic. Maggie Ann Martin addresses so many different issues of family, self, and the body in this novel and I’m excited to see how it’ll end. I’ve recently really loved Swoon Reads books and they always have the best covers.
I’ve also heard tons of great things about Maggie’s debut, The Big F, which I’ve added to my TBR and hope to read soon.
A Quiet Kind of Thunder by Sara Barnard
This book has been on my TBR for months (initially because of its GORGEOUS cover!) and I finally downloaded the ebook this week. I’m always looking for YA romances featuring characters with disabilities and from other marginalized backgrounds, and I love that this one has deaf representation, selective mutism representation, and also deals with anxiety. The Goodreads reviews are generally really positive, with a lot of reviewers noting that the book breaks down a lot of tropes/stereotypes around deaf folks & selective mutism.
Also, THAT COVER. This is one of those covers that I totally want to buy a print of and hang it up in my house.
Harry Potter & the Order of the Phoenix by J.K. Rowling, audiobook narrated by Jim Dale
If you’ve read my recent blog posts, you may know that I’m slowly making my way through the HP audiobooks, having never read any of them before. I’m finally on The Order of the Phoenix, and am actually (to my surprise) kind of hooked! I totally want Hermione to be my friend, and Molly Weasley to be my mom.
The worst part of reading/listening to HP for the first time (and having only seen some of the movies) is that since I’m a bookworm and a librarian, everyone assumes I’ve already read them. It’s been super hard to avoid spoilers!
One of my goals for August is to read 2 graphic novels a week, but I haven’t decided which ones to read this week. I’d love suggestions, so please tell me your favorite graphic novels!
What are you reading this week?
Lots of fun books here. Can’t believe I waited so long to read Harry Potter. Loved the series. I’m not much into graphic novels, but found this https://www.npr.org/2017/07/12/533862948/lets-get-graphic-100-favorite-comics-and-graphic-novels in my stumbling around the internet.
Hope you have a nice week.

I’m shocked that I managed to make it this long without reading HP! Thanks for the link, I’ll take a look at those ones.

I love the Catstronauts series! Of course anything cats is good with me. My son is on a Harry Potter kick right now. He listened to the first four on audio, then had to watch all the movies, and is now listening to 5-7 on audio. I’m enjoying revisiting the books with him and might even end up rereading the last 3 myself. Audio is a great way to experience the books, as Jim Dale’s narration is superb.

Nice looking group of books. Since retiring, I’m seeing less of what is new in YA. I did read Harry Potter years ago when each book was released. I haven’t read them since though even though I enjoyed them. Come see my week here. Happy reading!

Hey Ari! This looks like an amazing set of books to read! I am totally adding To Be Honest on by TBR. ALSO! I think I may re-read the HP books. I am a huge fan to start, and now may be a good time to start over. Thanks for sharing.

Yay! Glad you found a new title for your TBR. My partner is a huge HP fan & has been really enjoying listening to the audiobooks with me and laughing at my reactions, since it’s my first time reading/listening to them.

I’m adding To Be Honest to my list. Sounds really good! Also, you are making me want to go back and re-read Harry Potter right in a row. Again. LOVED the series (and our family does a movie marathon in October, every year, with matching snacks and such — can’t wait)! Have a wonderful reading week, Ari!

Hope you get to read To Be Honest soon! I stayed up late finishing it last night and it was such a sweet story. Most of my friends are huge HP fans & keep saying that hearing me talk about reading/listening to them for the first time has made them want to reread them. I’ve only seen some of the movies, but once I finish all the audiobooks I’m planning on doing a celebratory marathon of the movies. I love your idea of the matching snacks–I’ll have to do that!!

I did like Holm’s Sunny Side Up and Swing It Sunny, but if you’ve already read those, Cardboard Kingdom and All Summer Long would make good reads.

Enjoy Harry Potter! I love that series. I’m on the fence about reading A Quiet Kind of Thunder. I don’t like romance, but the other stuff sounds interesting.
