Can’t Wait Wednesday is a weekly meme hosted by Wishful Endings where bloggers share the books they can’t wait for. I use it here on my blog to highlight an upcoming release I’m excited for and tell you why it should be on your TBR!
Title: You Should See Me in a Crown
Author: Leah Johnson
Publisher: Scholastic Press
Release date: June 2, 2020
Goodreads Summary: “Liz Lighty has always believed she’s too black, too poor, too awkward to shine in her small, rich, prom-obsessed midwestern town. But it’s okay — Liz has a plan that will get her out of Campbell, Indiana, forever: attend the uber-elite Pennington College, play in their world-famous orchestra, and become a doctor.
But when the financial aid she was counting on unexpectedly falls through, Liz’s plans come crashing down . . . until she’s reminded of her school’s scholarship for prom king and queen. There’s nothing Liz wants to do less than endure a gauntlet of social media trolls, catty competitors, and humiliating public events, but despite her devastating fear of the spotlight she’s willing to do whatever it takes to get to Pennington.
The only thing that makes it halfway bearable is the new girl in school, Mack. She’s smart, funny, and just as much of an outsider as Liz. But Mack is also in the running for queen. Will falling for the competition keep Liz from her dreams . . . or make them come true?“
- A queer Black girl running for prom queen? Yes please!
- It’s an f/f romance between two girls competing for the same crown
- It also deals with heavier issues like anxiety and homophobia
- That happy, smiling Black girl on the cover is bringing me so much life!
- I’m always looking for books that explore real issues for teens–like scholarships and figuring out how to pay for college!
- Because you should be supporting queer Black authors producing #OwnVoices content!
- It sounds like a super cute fluffy rom-com
- Queer teens deserve more happily-ever-after stories. You should be reading & supporting romances like this one!
- It’s already getting amazing reviews
- Honestly, if that cover and title don’t make you want to read it then I don’t know what will!

What a fabulous premise – and I just LOVE that cover. So much hope and energy shining on her face:)). It makes me aware that most covers DON’T feature happy smiling people! Thank you for sharing.
