It’s Monday! What are you reading? April 8, 2019

“It’s Monday! What are you reading?” is a weekly meme hosted by Book Date. The folks at Teacher Mentor Texts and Unleashing Readers have given #IMWAYR a new lens by focusing on books for kids & teens. Check out their blogs to see what they’re reading!

WHAT I READ LAST WEEK

WHAT I’M READING THIS WEEK:

32048835Squad by Mariah MacCarthy, audiobook narrated by the author

I’m currently listening to this audiobook and am hoping to finish it soon, since it’s a super short one at just 5 and a half hours long. This YA contemporary is about Jenna, a cheerleader who, in the wake of a massive friend breakup and leaving her cheer squad, must find a way to reinvent herself and start over.

This book is a dark, funny Mean Girls-esque contemporary that’s super different from the YA books I normally read! I also love that the audiobook is narrated by the author. Jenna’s love interest is a trans guy named James, and I appreciate that she’s challenged to be a better ally and to actively educate herself rather than put that work on James.

41104100Up For Air by Laurie Morrison

I just received this ARC through the Kid Lit Exchange network and after starting it this weekend, I’m already hooked! This middle grade novel is about Annabelle, a girl struggling in school and dealing with feeling out of place. She finally starts to find a space for herself when she begins swimming alongside the high school swim team.

I was a swimmer all through high school, so I absolutely love reading about swimmers in MG & YA! I also love that this novel is about struggling in school and seeking help, as well as the pains of growing into teenagehood. This would be such a perfect book for young readers getting ready to move up to YA.

Up For Air is out on May 7!

  1. The Wicked King reminds me I need to get started on The cruel Prince soon! It’s one of those books I’ve been meaning to get to, and just haven’t! Ergh.

    Happy reading 🙂

  2. How interesting that I also read The Wicked King last week and I’ll be finishing Up for Air this coming week. We’re on the same wavelength!! I also have Squad on my TBR list, so I’ll look forward to reading that one eventually. Have a wonderful reading week, Ari!
