“It’s Monday! What are you reading?” is a weekly meme hosted by Book Date. The folks at Teacher Mentor Texts and Unleashing Readers have given #IMWAYR a new lens by focusing on books for kids & teens. Check out their blogs to see what they’re reading!
WHAT I READ LAST WEEK
- Mirage by Somaiya Daud, audiobook narrated by Rasha Zamamiri
- The House That Lou Built by Mae Respicio
- Saga, Vol. 1 by Brian K. Vaughan & Fiona Staples
Mirage was way outside my comfort zone since I normally don’t read any fantasy, but I actually loved it! I listened to it with my partner, who normally doesn’t like YA but also really enjoyed it. The narrator was great, and I’m really looking forward to the next one in the series! It was a great way to kick off my 2019 reading.
WHAT I’M EXCITED TO READ THIS WEEK:
Sorry Not Sorry by Jaime Reed
Alyssa and Janelle were BFFs, but high school pulled them in different directions. Janelle has become a teen activist who’s passionate about helping her community, while Alyssa has become a queen bee. But when Alyssa’s diabetes causes kidney failure and Janelle discovers she’s a match to donate, the two ex-BFFs might find their way back to each other.
I just started reading this ARC that I received through Kid Lit Exchange and am hoping to finish it this week. I’m glad to see a YA contemporary about female friendship & chronic illness with Black girl rep on the cover. I’ll be interested to see where this book goes!
There’s Someone Inside Your House by Stephanie Perkins, audiobook narrated by Bahni Turpin
A girl with a dark past. A (cute) boy with pink hair. A small town full of gossip. And teens turning up dead one by one.
I checked this audiobook out on a whim via Libby as soon as I saw that Bahni Turpin was the narrator. Bahni has easily become my favorite narrator and I’ll listen to pretty much anything by her (seriously, you could record her reading the nutritional facts off of a jar of mayonaise and I would be first on the library hold list). There’s very little Native Hawaiian rep in YA, so I’ll be really interested to continue listening and see how Perkins handles that.
What are you reading this week?
I love that recommendation for a narrator! The books look and sound good too. Come see my week here. Happy reading!

How did you enjoy Saga? I liked it I guess but I didn’t love it as much as some people do. And hope you like the Perkins book- I read it but sounds like it has a great narrator!
