It’s Monday! What are you reading? October 1, 2018

“It’s Monday! What are you reading?” is a weekly meme hosted by Book Date. The folks at Teacher Mentor Texts and Unleashing Readers have given #IMWAYR a new lens by focusing on books for kids & teens. Check out their blogs to see what they’re reading!

I use #IMWAYR mostly to organize my reading list for the week and set out my book goals.

WHAT I READ LAST WEEK:

Untitled design (3)

Over the last six months, I’ve been working through Harry Potter for the first time (I know, I know!) and I finally finished the last one yesterday. I never expected to really like it because I’m not a fan of fantasy but I really got into it and have to admit that I get the hype now! Now that I’ve finished the series, I feel like I’ve achieved a new level of true librarian status.

WHAT I’M EXCITED TO READ THIS WEEK:

35820001The Other Side of Lost by Jessica Kirby

Mari and her cousin Bri were inseperable, even sharing a birthday, until their teen years took them on separate paths: Bri on one of exploring the world and nature, and Mari on one that led to her being a social media influencer. Just a few months before their 18th birthday, Bri dies suddenly before she was able to accomplish her goal of hiking the John Muir Trail. Mari, finding herself with all of Bri’s hiking gear, abandons the artificially perfect life she’s created on Instagram to hike the trail that Bri never made it to.

I love books about surviving in the wilderness (my childhood favorites were The Boxcar ChildrenIsland of the Blue Dolphins, and Julie of the Wolves, so there’s a definite theme!) and hike a lot, so this one really called to me and was highly recommended. I started this book this past weekend while camping and it was the perfect read for being out in the wild. I can’t wait to finish it and see where Mari’s journey goes!

37941689Home and Away by Candice Montgomery

This contemporary YA novel is about a teenage girl whose life is turned upside down by revelations that challenge her identity. Tasia’s trying to figure out who she is and how that identity fits into her life.

Home and Away is out on October 16 and I’m eager to read the ARC I received. Tasia is described as “young, Black, and fabulous,” which is enough to get me excited about reading and recommending this book to teens at my library; I’m always looking for diverse #OwnVoices novels that celebrate characters of colors and their identities. Plus, I love YA books about teen athletes, and the fact that Tasia is a female football player is amazing. The cover is also stunning, from the sunset-like colors of Tasia’s hair to the football field reflected in her sunglasses.

What are you reading right now? Are there any popular books/series like Harry Potter that you haven’t read yet?

  1. Hearing good things about The Other Side of Lost. I sure hope we get a copy in my neck of the woods! Thanks for all the shares and have a wonderful reading week, Ari!

  2. Somewhere I read a good review of “I Am Still Alive” (Marshall) & I bought it, but still haven’t read it. It is a survival book like you’ve mentioned, so thought you’d like to look for it. I’ve noted “The Other Side of Lost”, sounds great. And I’ve never read all of the Harry Potter books, only about the first few. I liked them but other books pulled me away! Congrats on the completion!
