TBR Lows & Highs | September 20, 2018

TBR Highs & Lows is a meme hosted by Destiny at Howling Libraries (one of my favorite book blogs!), where bloggers remove older books (the “lows”) that they’ve decided not to read from their TBRs and highlight new additions to the list (the “highs”). Since I don’t have much I want to remove from my TBR, my “lows” will be older releases or books that have been on my TBR for a long time, but that I still want to read someday.

Here’s some of the books at the bottom of my TBR (but that I still want to read!):

Written in the Stars by Aisha Saeed
I haven’t seen any other YA novels address girls being forced into arranged marriages, and I think this is such an important topic. I’ve heard the writing is beautiful, too.

Tell Me Three Things by Julie Buxbaum
About a girl who forms a bond with a mysterious person sending her letters, this one’s different from what I’d normally read but has been recommended to be so many times. Plus, it has waffles on the cover!

Solo by Kwame Alexander
I love lyrical books in verse, and even though I have zero musical talent (I can’t even sing in-tune) I love books about music.

I’m Not Your Manic Pixie Dream Girl by Gretchen McNeil
This YA contemporary is all about a girl using her mathematical prowess to reinvent herself, which sounds like such a unique story. I also love that this book touches on bullying, which is such an important topic to address in YA.

All Out: The No-Longer-Secret Stories of Queer Teens Throughout the Ages, edited by Saundra Mitchell
It’s honestly super weird that I haven’t read this anthology yet—it’s queer! It’s diverse! It’s YA! It has tons of my favorite authors in it! Don’t ask me why I haven’t read it yet, because I don’t know.

 

Here’s what I’ve added to my TBR recently:

The Leading Edge of Now by Marci Lyn Curtis
Release date: September 4, 2018
This one deals with sexual assault, so I know it’ll be difficult for me to read, but there’s always a need for more survivors’ stories in YA. It also has a beautiful cover that I think evokes so many emotions.

That Night by Amy Giles
Release date: October 23, 2018
A timely YA contemporary about greif, gun violence, mental health, and life after trauma. I’ve also heard great things about Amy Giles’s debut, Now Is Everything.

How She Died, How I Lived by Mary Crokett
Release date: November 13, 2018
This YA novel is told from the perspective of one of five girls that a boy texted the day he murdered one of them. It deals with survivor’s guilt and trauma (and I think the concept of having an unnamed narrator is really interesting!).

The Similars by Rebecca Hanover
Release date: January 1, 2019
Clones + boarding school = super creepy! This book sounds eerie, complex, and perfect for Winter.

Slayer by Kiersten White
Release date: January 8, 2019
Buffy the Vampire Slayer is pretty much my favorite thing ever, and I’m beyond excited about a YA novel set in the Buffyverse. I think TV/movie-inspired books can be hit or miss, so I’m crossing my fingers that this one will be amazing.
