TBR Lows & Highs | September 6, 2018

TBR Highs & Lows is a meme hosted by Destiny at Howling Libraries (one of my favorite book blogs!), where bloggers remove older books (the “lows”) that they’ve decided not to read from their TBRs and highlight new additions to the list (the “highs”). Since I don’t have much I want to remove from my TBR, my “lows” will be older releases or books that have been on my TBR for a long time, but that I still want to read someday.

Here’s some of the books at the bottom of my TBR (but that I still want to read!):

The Darkest Corners by Kara Thomas
This is a spooky thriller about childhood friends driven apart by dark secrets. I recently read The Cheerleaders, which was my first Kara Thomas book, and now I want to read all of hers!

Asking For It by Louise O’Neill
This YA novel about the aftermath of sexual assault has been on my TBR for a while because I know it’ll be hard for me to read. I’m always looking for more books about sexual assault survivors to share with teens at my library because these survivors’ voices need to be heard.

If You Could Be Mine by Sara Farizan
Sara Farizan’s story in the new YA anthology Fresh Ink was so sweet and it totally made me want to read more of her work. If You Could Be Mine is a queer love story set in Iran that sounds so touching.

I’ll Give You the Sun by Jandy Nelson
I don’t know how I haven’t yet read this award-winning, tear-jerking book about twins whose relationship has been drastically changed, because I love sad books! There are so many YA books about twins, so I’m always looking for ones that present a new spin.

The Disenchantments by Nina LaCour
I’m hoping to read all of Nina LaCour’s books, and this is one that I haven’t gotten to yet. It’s all about summer road trips on the Pacific Northwest and band tours, so I think I’ll save it for next summer.

What the Woods Keep by Katya de Becerra
Release date: September 18, 2018
Atmospheric spooky woods settings are so perfect for Fall, and I love that this one uses that backdrop as platform for a genre blend of paranormal, mystery, thriller, sci-fi, and urban fantasy.

Come November by Katrin van Dam
Release date: October 30, 2018
This novel is about a teen whose life gets torn apart when her mom joins a cult that believes they will soon be leaving Earth. It sounds emotional and dark, and delves into something that there aren’t a ton of YA books about.

The Art of Losing by Lizzy Mason
Release date: February 19, 2019
Harley abandons her boyfriend Mike & her younger sister Audrey when she finds them hooking up at a party. But when drunk Mike tries to drive Audrey home, the car crashes—and Audrey is left in a coma. This sounds like such a complex novel full of grief, guilt, pain, and love.

Words We Don’t Say by K. J. Reilly
Release date: October 2, 2018
Books about unsent letters are always fun reads, and this one has a 2018 update by being about unsent text messages. One of my favorite things to read about is finding your way back to yourself in the wake of grief, so I have a feeling I’ll love this one.

The Quiet at the End of the World by Lauren James
Release date: March 7, 2019
This YA sci-fi novel is about the two youngest people left in the world after a virus causes infertility around the world. I just binge-read Lauren James’ The Loneliest Girl in the Universe and am so obsessed with it, I can’t wait for another one from her.
