It’s Monday! What are you reading? July 30, 2018

“It’s Monday! What are you reading?” is a weekly meme hosted by Book Date. The folks at Teacher Mentor Texts and Unleashing Readers have given #IMWAYR a new lens by focusing on books for kids & teens. Check out their blogs to see what they’re reading!

I use #IMWAYR mostly to organize my reading list for the week and set out my book goals. Here’s what I read last week:

I’m also currently finishing up the Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire audiobook (narrated by Jim Dale) and will be starting Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix as soon as I finish.

And here’s what I’m excited to read this week:

26207516Love and Other Alien Experiences by Kerry Winfrey

I loved Kerry Winfrey’s most recent book, and I’m really excited to read her debut novel. She’s amazing at writing truthfully about doubts and fears, and I’m interested to see how she writes about mental health. I also love that the protagonist of this novel is obsessed with aliens.

Here’s the full Goodreads summary:Mallory hasn’t left the house in sixty-seven days–since the day her dad left. She attends her classes via webcam, rarely leaves her room (much to her brother’s chagrin), and spends most of her time watching The X-Files or chatting with the always obnoxious BeamMeUp on New Mexico’s premier alien message board.

But when she’s shockingly nominated for homecoming queen, her life takes a surprising turn. She slowly begins to open up to the world outside. And maybe if she can get her popular jock neighbor Brad Kirkpatrick to be her homecoming date, her classmates will stop calling her a freak.

In this heartwarming and humorous debut, Mallory discovers first love and the true meaning of home–just by taking one small step outside her house.”

Puddin’28269171 by Julie Murphy

Julie is the author of one of my favorite YA books, Ramona Blue, and I absolutely adored Dumplin’. I have had Puddin’, the companion to Dumplin’, on my shelf since it came out, and I’m hoping to finally get to it this week and find out what Millie has been up to.

Also, Dumplin’ totally gave me new levels of admiration for Dolly Parton. It should be a requirement that you have to listen to Dolly while reading it.

Here’s the full Goodreads summary: “Millie Michalchuk has gone to fat camp every year since she was a girl. Not this year. This year she has new plans to chase her secret dream—and to kiss her crush. Callie Reyes is the pretty girl who is next in line for dance team captain and has the popular boyfriend. But when it comes to other girls, she’s more frenemy than friend. When circumstances bring the girls together over the course of a semester, they will surprise everyone (especially themselves) by realizing they might have more in common than they ever imagined.”

  1. After your words on Love and Other Alien Experiences, I have to add it to my TBR list. The writing and storyline sound wonderful (and off the beaten path). So I’ll look forward to hunting that one down. Thanks for the shares this week, Ari!

    1. I’ve never read Harry Potter before, and I didn’t think I’d like it, since I’m not big on magic/fantasy, but Jim Dale definitely makes it super enjoyable! His voices for the characters really make the story come to life. I’m glad that I’m finally reading/listening to them.

  2. I’m interested in reading The Witch Boy. I read Dumplin a while ago, but Willowdean Dixon just didn’t grab me and make me really care about her. On top of this I couldn’t connect with anybody wanting to participate in a beauty pageant. I’ll probably pass on Puddin’.

    1. The Witch Boy was a nice quick read! I liked that it explored gender roles in a magical way. I understand about Dumplin’ not being for everybody. I did like it much more than I expected!

  3. Witch Boy was one of those books I got mid-year, gave it out almost immediately and never got around to reading. I will have to get back into school to grab it and give it a read. I had kind of forgotten. I have one more graphic novel in the house to read and in a week or so when I am in the mood for another I will get that one. Thanks for the reminder, You Go First looks good as well.
